Tom Montag's new book

The Idea of the local and other essays
Amazon says:
The essays in The Idea of the Local continue Montag's exploration of place and places, of people in place and the ghosts on the landscape, as Montag pays patient attention to where he is and where we are, believing that however much we might shape a place we are also shaped by it, indelibly. Here he examines some of the ways our places make us who we are. ~ An Iowa-born poet and essayist who has resided in Fairwater, Wisconsin, for more than thirty years, Montag wonders how, in the face of the farmer's silence he knew in his youth, any farm-boy ever comes to speech, much less to writing. His sensibility was marked early on by the directness of experience in his farm childhood and by the longing which comes of watching the far horizon. ~ The Idea of the Local is divided into three sections. The first, "Riding with the Local Used Cow Dealer," gathers profiles of seven people in relation to the places they inhabit (or inhabited, as some are historical profiles). The second part, "Being Here," brings together moments and mementos from Montag's home ground in Fairwater. And the final section, "The Idea of the Local," reveals other places Montag has visited and seen deeply into. Altogether the essays illustrate the idea of the local and may help readers to understand their own places in new ways.

Digitized newspapers
In 2007, with help from the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation, the Emmetsburg Public Library had the entire extant collection of Emmetsburg's newspapers digitized from microfilm. The collection is on a website hosted by Heritage Microfilm. The site enables word-searching by using Optical Character Recognition technology. Additionally, browsing by title and issue is equally facilitated. This link will take you to a login page: http://emmetsburg.newspaperarchive.com/
You may either enter your login information or you may access the site at the library.

Watch for this Balloon - Ambrosia
Hopefully it will fly over Emmetsburg this weekend. The pilot is my brother-in-law Max Harris, with my sister as the crew chief. Hot Air Balloons need very calm winds and so far the weather report has not said this is going to happen.I have some pictures available at the front desk of the library if you would like a copy so if they do fly you can be sure and know which one is Ambrosia.

RICE
The Library is in need of uncooked rice. We want to fill a treasurer chest to use in our summer reading program. We believe it will be cleaner than sand.
disc machine

The five libraries in Palo Alto County have purchased a disc repair machine to maintain their disc media collections and to offer disc repair as a public service. The machine will repair audio CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and Sony Playstation Games. It will remove very extensive scratching. Bring your damaged discs to the library to be repaired for a fee of $1.00. This machine works GREAT, even on our discs that get so much use.

Two Books Same Name
Obsession by Jonathan Kellerman is another Alex Delaware book, he once again joined with his friend Milo Sturgis, an LAPD detective.
Obsession by Karen Robards adds psychological spice to a familiar lover-on-the run plot. Robards's 23rd novel again spins satisfaction out of appealing characters who fall in love and bad guys who get justice.
****05/03/07 I have read both books and liked the one by Karen Robards better. Kellerman's book had too many characters for me.
